Turkey Travel Health and Vaccinations
Hep A, Typhoid, routine boosters, and rural/eastern Turkey-specific considerations.
Pre-travel vaccines for Istanbul, the Turkish Riviera, Cappadocia and rural east
Turkey is consistently in the top 10 UK leisure destinations — Istanbul city breaks, all-inclusive Turkish Riviera (Antalya, Bodrum, Marmaris), Cappadocia hot air balloons, and increasingly the rural east (Mount Nemrut, Lake Van, Mardin). The travel-health profile is generally low-key for the western resort areas but more involved for rural and eastern Turkey.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run Turkey pre-travel appointments year-round, with peak booking April through October ahead of summer holidays. A typical appointment is 30 minutes covering vaccines, food and water guidance, and any region-specific considerations.

For Turkey trips most travellers consider: Hepatitis A and Typhoid (food and water exposure, particularly outside resort areas), an up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, and for some travellers Hepatitis B (longer stays), Rabies (rural travel with animal contact), and Tick-Borne Encephalitis (forested rural areas in spring/summer).

Turkey is a low-vaccine destination — with caveats
For all-inclusive resort breaks on the Turkish Riviera, the travel-health considerations are modest. Outside that — Istanbul street food, Cappadocia village stays, rural eastern Turkey — the picture changes and vaccines matter more.
The standard pair: Hepatitis A and Typhoid
Hepatitis A is the single most recommended vaccine for Turkey — transmitted via contaminated food and water, with relatively high prevalence in some areas. Typhoid is recommended particularly for travellers going outside the standard resort circuit, eating street food, or staying longer than a couple of weeks. Combined Hep A and Typhoid vaccination is available as a single injection and gives long-term protection.
Routine booster review
Worth checking your Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio status. If your last dose was more than 10 years ago, a booster is sensible — outside the holiday context, it's just good housekeeping.
Rural and eastern Turkey — add-ons to consider
If you're going to rural areas, particularly eastern Turkey, additional considerations come in. Rabies is worth discussing if you're walking, cycling, or spending time around stray dogs — medical care for post-exposure rabies treatment isn't always quickly accessible in rural east. Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a consideration for forested areas in spring and summer, particularly around the Black Sea coast. Hepatitis B if you're staying longer than a month or are likely to have any healthcare or sexual contact.
What we don't worry about
Yellow Fever isn't a Turkey requirement and the country isn't at risk. Malaria is essentially eliminated from Turkey — the last cases were a small focus in the south-east in the early 2010s. Cholera isn't a routine consideration. Most travellers leave with just Hep A + Typhoid and a booster check.
Food, water and heat
The bigger travel-health risks for most Turkey travellers are practical: travellers' diarrhoea (often from food not water in resort areas), heat illness in the summer months, and sun exposure. We cover all of this at your appointment with a personalised written summary.
Children and Turkey
Turkey is hugely popular for family holidays. Vaccines are licensed: Hep A from age 1, Typhoid from age 2. Most family bookings need just the Hep A+Typhoid combination and a routine vaccine check.

Common Turkey travel vaccine questions
Do I need vaccines for Turkey?
Most travellers consider Hepatitis A and Typhoid — particularly if you're eating outside all-inclusive resorts. An up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster is sensible. Rural travellers may need Rabies, Tick-Borne Encephalitis or Hepatitis B.
Is there a Yellow Fever or malaria risk?
No. Yellow Fever isn't required and Turkey is malaria-free — the last cases were in the early 2010s and elimination has held.
What about all-inclusive resorts?
Lower travel-health risk than independent travel, but Hep A is still worth considering. The main risks in resorts are travellers' diarrhoea (often food-borne, not water), heat illness and sun exposure.
Is the water safe?
Tap water is generally safe in major cities and hotels but bottled water is safer in rural areas. Be cautious of ice and salads outside reputable establishments.
What about street food in Istanbul?
It's part of the trip — worth it. Standard guidance: busy stalls with high turnover are safer than quiet ones. Hep A and Typhoid vaccines give you backup if something goes wrong.
What's Tick-Borne Encephalitis and do I need it?
Viral infection transmitted by tick bites in forested areas. Risk in Turkey is concentrated around the Black Sea coast in spring and summer. Vaccine is worth discussing if you're hiking, camping or doing forest activities in these areas.
How early should I book?
2–4 weeks before travel is plenty for most Turkey vaccines. Hep A works effectively from 2 weeks. Rabies (3 doses) needs 21–28 days if you're doing the full course.
