Tanzania Travel Health and Vaccinations
Yellow Fever certificate, malaria across the country, and Kilimanjaro altitude planning if you're climbing.
Pre-travel vaccines, Yellow Fever certificate, and Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar planning
Tanzania is one of East Africa's biggest UK travel destinations — the northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara), Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar's Indian Ocean beaches. The travel-health profile spans three distinct risks: Yellow Fever certificate (sometimes required), year-round malaria across most of the country, and altitude considerations for Kilimanjaro climbers.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run pre-Tanzania appointments year-round. Peak season is June through October for the safari circuit and Kilimanjaro climbs; Zanzibar bookings spread across the year. A typical appointment is 30 minutes and covers your full vaccine bundle plus written altitude or malaria summaries depending on your itinerary.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice as Gunwharf Travel Clinic's lead pharmacist. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
For most Tanzania trips you'll consider: Yellow Fever (required if transiting from a YF country, otherwise recommended for travel outside Zanzibar), Hepatitis A, Typhoid, an up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis B for longer stays, Rabies for rural travel, and malaria tablets for almost the entire country below 1,800m.

Tanzania has more vaccine considerations than most African destinations
The combination of Yellow Fever certificate rules, year-round malaria across the lowlands, and altitude considerations for Kilimanjaro climbers makes Tanzania one of the more complex pre-travel consultations. The good news: all of it can be sorted in a single 30-minute appointment.
Yellow Fever — when do you need it?
Tanzania requires a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from countries with risk of Yellow Fever transmission. This includes most of West and Central Africa and parts of South America. Direct UK to Tanzania flights don't trigger this rule — but Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, RwandAir via Kigali, and any African connection generally does. We check your itinerary. Even without a transit requirement, Yellow Fever is generally recommended for travel to mainland Tanzania (not Zanzibar islands only). Single injection, certificate valid for life as of WHO 2016 update.
Malaria — country-wide, year-round
Malaria is present across virtually all of Tanzania below 1,800m, including the safari areas (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater rim is above 2,000m but the floor and approach roads are lower), Zanzibar, and Dar es Salaam. We almost universally recommend tablets — typically Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) for short trips or doxycycline for longer stays. Both prescribed and dispensed at the appointment. Bite-prevention is critical: DEET-based repellent, long clothing at dawn and dusk, permethrin-treated clothing for night.
Climbing Kilimanjaro — altitude is the bigger risk than vaccines
If you're climbing Kili, the altitude itself is statistically the biggest health risk on the trip — bigger than any infectious disease. Acute Mountain Sickness affects most climbers above 3,500m; severe forms (HACE and HAPE) are life-threatening if not managed. We discuss: acclimatisation strategy (7-day routes have much lower complication rates than 5-day routes), acetazolamide (Diamox) as prophylaxis, recognising warning signs, and what to do if symptoms escalate. We can prescribe Diamox at your appointment if appropriate.
Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and the routine bundle
Standard for Africa travel: Hepatitis A and Typhoid for food and water exposure, the routine Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis B for longer stays, and Rabies if you'll be in rural areas without easy access to medical care.
Zanzibar specifically
Lower malaria risk than mainland but still present — tablets still recommended. Yellow Fever certificate sometimes requested even on intra-Tanzania flights from Zanzibar to mainland. Beach travellers tend to underestimate the food-and-water exposure in resort settings — Hep A and Typhoid still matter. We see Zanzibar bookings often pair with safari trips on the mainland.

Common Tanzania travel vaccine questions
Do I need Yellow Fever for Tanzania?
It's required if you've transited a Yellow Fever risk country (most of West/Central Africa, parts of South America) within the 6 days before arrival. This catches travellers connecting via Addis Ababa, Kigali, or Nairobi. Even without a certificate requirement, Yellow Fever is recommended for mainland Tanzania. Single injection, valid for life. Certificate issued the same appointment.
What other vaccines do I need?
Hepatitis A, Typhoid, an up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis B for longer stays. Rabies is worth discussing for rural travel. All can be given in a single 30-minute appointment.
Do I need malaria tablets?
For almost all Tanzania travel, yes. Malaria is present across the country below 1,800m, year-round. Common options are Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) for short trips and doxycycline for longer stays. We dispense the tablets at your appointment.
What about climbing Kilimanjaro?
Altitude is the biggest health risk on a Kili climb — bigger than any infectious disease. We discuss acetazolamide (Diamox) for altitude sickness prevention, acclimatisation strategy, and recognising danger signs. Whether to take Diamox is a personal choice we'll talk through.
Is there malaria in Zanzibar?
Lower risk than mainland Tanzania but still present. Tablets are usually recommended. Bite-prevention measures (DEET, long sleeves at dawn and dusk) matter.
How early should I book?
Ideally 4–8 weeks before travel. Yellow Fever certificate is valid 10 days after vaccination — so the absolute minimum is 2 weeks before travel. Hep A and Typhoid work effectively if given at least 2 weeks before.
Can I get all the vaccines in one visit?
Yes. We routinely give 3–4 vaccines in a single 30-minute appointment. Malaria tablets dispensed at the same visit.
