Kenya Travel Vaccinations and Health Advice
Yellow Fever certificate, malaria tablets and Hepatitis A advice for Kenya. Same-day appointments at Gunwharf Travel Clinic.
Travel vaccines for Kenya — Yellow Fever, malaria and the essentials
Kenya is one of the most popular long-haul African destinations from the UK — safari in the Maasai Mara and Amboseli, beach holidays in Diani and Mombasa, climbing Mount Kenya, plus growing business and family travel. From a travel health perspective Kenya combines three things you don't usually find together: a Yellow Fever certificate often required at entry, significant malaria risk in most of the country, and the standard food-and-water vaccine considerations.
Gunwharf Travel Clinic is pharmacist-led and NaTHNaC-designated for Yellow Fever certificates. We run Kenya pre-travel consultations regularly. Most appointments take 20–30 minutes and you walk out with everything you need — jabs, certificate, malaria advice, written summary.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
The standard Kenya vaccine combination is Yellow Fever (single injection, lifetime certificate), Hepatitis A, Typhoid and a Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster. Most travellers also discuss malaria tablets — Kenya has significant risk in most of the country below 2,500m, with Malarone or Doxycycline the usual choices for short-stay travellers.

Yellow Fever certificate for Kenya
Yellow Fever vaccination is often required for entry to Kenya — particularly if you're entering having travelled from or transited through other Yellow Fever risk countries (most of sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South America). The certificate is set by the Kenyan authorities and checked at entry. The standard recommendation is to vaccinate at least 10 days before arrival, which is when the ICVP certificate becomes valid. We sort Yellow Fever vaccination in a single 20-minute appointment with the certificate issued the same day.
Malaria across Kenya
Kenya has significant malaria risk in most of the country below 2,500m altitude. Areas above 2,500m (Nairobi, the highest parts of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya) are considered low-risk. The coastal strip (Mombasa, Diani, Watamu, Malindi), Lake Victoria basin, Maasai Mara and most safari areas are higher-risk year-round. Standard anti-malarial choices for Kenya are Malarone (atovaquone-proguanil) — daily dosing, well-tolerated; or Doxycycline — daily dosing, cheaper. Lariam (mefloquine) is used less commonly. We discuss which is right for your route at the consultation.
The standard Kenya vaccine combination
Most Kenya travellers benefit from: Yellow Fever (lifetime certificate), Hepatitis A (food and water), Typhoid (food and water), and a current Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster. Longer stays or higher-risk activities sometimes add Hepatitis B, Rabies (particularly for children, longer stays, wildlife conservation work), and Cholera for active outbreak zones.
Special considerations
Maasai Mara and Lake Victoria areas have particular relevance for both schistosomiasis (avoid freshwater swimming) and tsetse fly bites (long sleeves and trousers in the bush). Coastal Kenya carries dengue risk in addition to malaria — repellent and covered skin during day and night. Wildlife safari travellers should consider Rabies vaccination, particularly for camping and longer field stays. Children visiting family in Kenya need careful review of routine vaccines and rabies thinking.

Common Kenya travel vaccine questions
What vaccines do I need for Kenya?
Standard combination is Yellow Fever (often required at entry, lifetime certificate), Hepatitis A, Typhoid and a current Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster. Longer stays or higher-risk activities add Hepatitis B, Rabies and Cholera for active outbreak areas. We tailor the combination to your specific itinerary.
Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate for Kenya?
Often yes — particularly if you're entering Kenya having travelled from or transited through other Yellow Fever risk countries. The certificate is checked at entry. The vaccine is a single injection with lifetime validity under current WHO rules; book at least 10 days before travel.
What about malaria?
Most of Kenya below 2,500m altitude is malaria-risk year-round. The Maasai Mara, Amboseli, coastal Kenya (Mombasa, Diani, Watamu, Malindi), Lake Victoria basin and most safari areas all need anti-malarials. Nairobi and the highest parts of Mount Kenya are low-risk. Standard choices are Malarone or Doxycycline.
What about dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses?
Dengue, chikungunya and Zika are present in coastal Kenya year-round with peaks during and after the rains. Tablets don't prevent these — repellent, covered skin during the day and night, and accommodation with screens or AC are the main protections.
Do I need to worry about rabies?
Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is worth considering for longer stays, children, wildlife conservation volunteers, and rural travel. Stray dogs are present in many areas. The decision depends on your specific itinerary and access to post-exposure treatment if needed.
How early should I book?
Ideally 4–6 weeks before travel — enough time for multi-dose courses, for the Yellow Fever certificate to validate (10 days after the jab), and to start anti-malarials at the right time. Same-day appointments are routinely available for tighter timelines.
Are Kenya travel vaccines free on the NHS?
Some — Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio combined are sometimes free through your GP for Kenya travel. Yellow Fever, Rabies, Meningitis ACWY, and most anti-malarials are private. Many travellers book the lot privately for time and convenience.
