Morocco Travel Health Advice and Vaccinations

Morocco is low risk for malaria, but food, water, measles and rabies planning still matters. Book travel health advice in Portsmouth before you go.

Moroccos main risks are easy to underestimate

For Morocco, the travel health conversation is less about malaria tablets and more about routine vaccines, food and water hygiene, animal bites, measles protection and heat. That catches people out. Short city breaks to Marrakech or Tangier can still involve street food, crowded transport and stray cats or dogs, while Atlas trekking brings altitude and injury planning into the picture. At Gunwharf Travel Clinic in Portsmouth, we can review your itinerary and check what is sensible before you travel.

City breaks, family visits and Atlas routes bring different exposure

UK travellers go to Morocco for several quite different trips. Some are there for a long weekend in Marrakech, Fes, Rabat or Casablanca. Others are visiting relatives, travelling with children, joining organised tours, surfing around the Atlantic coast, or walking in the High Atlas. The health preparation shifts with that detail. A resort stay with packaged meals is not the same as a month staying with family, eating in local homes and moving between towns. Trekking near Mount Toubkal is different again because altitude becomes part of the conversation, not just vaccines. Most Morocco trips are manageable from a travel health point of view, but the small practical risks are the ones worth taking seriously: stomach illness, sun and heat, road travel, animal contact and whether your UK routine jabs are actually up to date.

Rabies, measles and food hygiene matter more than malaria here

Malaria prevention tablets are not usually the main issue for Morocco. Mosquito and tick bites still deserve attention, because parts of North Africa report insect-borne infections, but for most travellers the bigger risks sit elsewhere. Hepatitis A is commonly recommended for previously unvaccinated travellers because it spreads through contaminated food and water. Typhoid vaccination is often considered too, especially for longer trips, young children, frequent travel, family visits, or routes where food hygiene may be less predictable. Tetanus should be current, particularly if you may trek, cycle, ride animals or spend time away from easy medical care. Routine UK vaccines matter. Morocco has had reported measles activity, so MMR status is worth checking before travel, especially for children, teenagers and adults who may have missed doses. Hepatitis B may be discussed for longer stays, new sexual partners, contact sports, healthcare work, tattoos, piercings or a higher chance of medical or dental treatment abroad. Rabies is present in Morocco and has been reported in domestic animals. A bite, scratch or lick on broken skin from a dog, cat or bat needs urgent medical advice. Pre-travel rabies vaccination is worth discussing for children, runners, cyclists, animal work, longer stays and trips where prompt post-bite treatment could be difficult. Very low schistosomiasis risk has been reported, so avoid swimming or wading in untreated freshwater. The sea and properly maintained pools are different.

Book early enough to make decisions properly

Aim to book your travel health appointment four to six weeks before departure. That gives time to check your vaccine history, discuss any courses that need more than one dose, and think through the actual route rather than just the country name. If you are leaving sooner, still come in. A late appointment can still catch missing routine vaccines, give useful food and bite advice, and flag risks you may not have considered. Bring your itinerary if you have one, plus any vaccine records you can find. We will ask about length of stay, rural travel, family visits, trekking, medical conditions, pregnancy, medicines and previous vaccine reactions. For Morocco, practical advice usually includes safe eating and drinking, oral rehydration planning, sun protection, insect repellent, avoiding animal contact, and knowing what to do after a bite or scratch.

Local advice before Morocco

Morocco is close enough that people sometimes treat it as a low-preparation trip. It is usually not complicated, but it is still worth checking the details. Gunwharf Travel Clinic can review your plans, vaccinations and bite or food precautions before you go. Book online, or call 02392821859. If you live in Southsea or travel in from Gosport, the clinic is easy to reach for a pre-travel appointment.

Common questions

What Our Customers Ask

Do I need travel vaccinations for Morocco from the UK?

Most travellers should check hepatitis A, tetanus and typhoid suitability before going to Morocco. Your routine UK vaccines, especially MMR and diphtheria-tetanus-polio, should also be up to date. Extra vaccines may be discussed if you are staying longer, visiting family, trekking, working in healthcare or likely to have close animal contact.

Is malaria a risk in Morocco?

Malaria tablets are not usually advised for typical Morocco travel. That does not mean insects can be ignored, as bites can still cause skin infections and some insect-borne illnesses occur in North Africa. Pack repellent, cover up when needed and use sensible bite avoidance, particularly around dusk or in rural areas.

How long before travelling to Morocco should I book an appointment?

Four to six weeks before travel is a good target. It leaves time to review your vaccine record and complete any vaccine schedule that needs spacing. If your trip is sooner, an appointment is still worthwhile because some protection and practical advice can still be arranged.

Can I get altitude sickness in Morocco?

Yes, if your trip includes high mountain areas. Mount Toubkal is over 4,000 metres, and altitude illness can happen when ascent is too quick or sleep altitude rises sharply. If you are trekking in the High Atlas, plan gradual ascent, avoid pushing through symptoms, and get advice before travel if you have heart, lung or significant medical conditions.
