Pre-travel review for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the wider UAE — routine boosters and practical advice

The UAE is one of the busiest UK leisure and business destinations — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, increasingly the smaller emirates Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. From a travel-health perspective the UAE is low-risk: no required vaccinations, no malaria, no Yellow Fever, drinking water is safe in major cities, healthcare is world-class. What we cover at the appointment is routine booster review, heat illness prevention, and a couple of region-specific considerations.

At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we see UAE pre-travel appointments year-round. Most are short and focused — a 30-minute slot is plenty to cover everything, including a written travel-health summary.

Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).

For most UAE trips you'll consider: an up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster (general best practice for any travel), Hepatitis A if you're going off the standard resort circuit, Hepatitis B for longer stays. Heat illness prevention matters at least as much as vaccines.

The UAE is low-vaccine — most appointments are short

There are no mandatory vaccinations for UAE entry. No Yellow Fever risk. No malaria (it's been eliminated). The healthcare system in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is world-class. So what does a pre-UAE appointment actually cover? Three things: routine booster check, optional Hep A for travellers going outside the hotel circuit, and a heat illness brief.

Routine booster review

If your Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio dose is more than 10 years old, a booster is sensible — not because of any UAE-specific risk but as general housekeeping for international travel.

Optional Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A isn't strictly required for the UAE but worth considering if you're going outside the standard hotel restaurant circuit — street food in Dubai's old town, independent travel into the desert, longer stays.

The heat is the bigger story

Summer temperatures in the UAE regularly exceed 45°C with extreme humidity. Heat illness is statistically a more likely health issue for UAE travellers than any vaccine-preventable disease. We discuss: hydration (water and electrolytes, not just water alone), sun exposure, chronic condition management (diabetes, hypertension, cardiac history), travelling with medications in extreme heat, and recognising warning signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Medications and the UAE — know the rules

The UAE has strict rules about prescription and over-the-counter medications. Some common UK medications (including certain codeine-containing painkillers, some psychiatric medications, and CBD products) are controlled or banned. Travellers have been detained for arriving with personal medication that's legal in the UK but restricted in the UAE. We cover the rules and how to check current Ministry of Health guidance.

MERS-CoV surveillance

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus has had sporadic cases in the UAE and broader Gulf region, mostly via camel contact. Tourist travel doesn't trigger any specific advice beyond standard respiratory hygiene. If you're planning camel-related activities (rides, races, breeding farms), we can discuss the limited current evidence.

Children, families and business travel

UAE is a major family destination. Standard routine vaccines (NHS schedule) should be up to date — we can check. For business travellers, the same applies plus we discuss medication rules and any specific work-related exposures.

Common questions

Common UAE and Dubai travel questions

Do I need any vaccines for the UAE?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for UAE entry. We recommend a routine Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster check, and Hepatitis A is worth considering if you're going outside hotel restaurants. For longer stays or healthcare exposure, Hepatitis B.

Is there a Yellow Fever requirement?

Only if you've transited from a Yellow Fever risk country within 6 days of arrival — most travellers coming direct from the UK won't trigger this.

Is the tap water safe in Dubai?

Yes — Dubai and Abu Dhabi municipal water meets international standards. Most travellers still prefer bottled for taste. Outside the major cities, bottled is safer.

What about the heat?

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C with extreme humidity. Heat illness is a real consideration. We cover hydration, sun exposure, chronic condition management and warning signs at your appointment.

Can I take my regular medications to Dubai?

Maybe not. The UAE restricts some medications that are legal in the UK — certain codeine-containing painkillers, some psychiatric medications, CBD products and others. Worth checking the current UAE Ministry of Health list before you travel. We can help.

What about MERS?

MERS-CoV has sporadic cases in the Gulf but tourist travel doesn't trigger specific advice beyond standard respiratory hygiene. If you're doing camel-related activities, we can discuss the limited evidence.

How early should I book?

1–2 weeks is plenty for most UAE pre-travel reviews. Hep A works effectively from 2 weeks pre-departure.

Where do I get my UAE vaccines in Portsmouth?

Gunwharf Travel Clinic, 24 Queen Street, Portsea, Portsmouth PO1 3HN. Same-day appointments most weeks. Walking distance from Gunwharf Quays.
