Peru Travel Health and Vaccinations
Yellow Fever (Amazon), Cusco altitude, Hep A + Typhoid, malaria assessment for jungle trips.
Pre-travel vaccines for Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and the Amazon
Peru is the headline South American destination for UK travellers — Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, Cusco and the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, Lima, Arequipa, the Amazon basin around Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, and the northern beaches. The travel-health profile combines altitude (Cusco at 3,400m, Inca Trail higher), Yellow Fever requirement for Amazon travel, and standard South America vaccine bundle.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run Peru pre-travel appointments year-round, peaking April through October ahead of dry season trekking. A typical appointment is 30–45 minutes if Inca Trail is planned.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
For Peru you'll typically consider: Yellow Fever certificate (recommended for Amazon travel and required if onward-travelling to certain countries from Peru), Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis B for longer stays, Rabies for rural travel, altitude planning with Diamox for Cusco/Inca Trail, and malaria assessment for Amazon trips.

Peru combines altitude and Amazon — the two big considerations
Most Peru trips include Cusco and Machu Picchu (altitude) and many include an Amazon extension (Yellow Fever, malaria). The pre-travel conversation flexes accordingly.
Cusco and the Inca Trail — altitude is the dominant story
Cusco sits at 3,400m — high enough to cause Acute Mountain Sickness in many travellers who fly straight in from Lima. The classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu reaches 4,215m at Dead Woman's Pass. We discuss: acclimatisation strategy (spend nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before trekking), acetazolamide (Diamox) as prophylaxis, coca leaf use (traditional remedy, mild stimulant, not a replacement for Diamox if you're sensitive to altitude), and warning signs. We can prescribe Diamox at your appointment.
Yellow Fever for the Amazon
Yellow Fever is recommended for travellers visiting Amazon regions including jungle lodges around Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, the Manu reserve, and any Amazon-basin extensions. Single injection, certificate valid for life under WHO 2016 update. Also sometimes required for onward travel from Peru to certain countries. We're a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and issue the certificate the same appointment.
Hep A, Typhoid and routine boosters
Food and water exposure across Peru — ceviche, street food, less reliable water supplies in rural areas. Hepatitis A and Typhoid recommended for almost all travellers. Up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster. Hepatitis B for longer stays.
Malaria — Amazon and northern lowlands
Malaria is present in Amazon basin areas of Peru including around Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, and the northern departments bordering Ecuador. We typically recommend tablets for travellers spending more than overnight in these areas. Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lima and the Sacred Valley are malaria-free.
Dengue and other vector-borne
Dengue is present in lowland Peru including around urban centres. Bite prevention (DEET, long clothing) covers both malaria and dengue — we go through this in detail.
Practical considerations
Tap water isn't safe across Peru — use bottled or boiled. Stick to hot cooked food. Ceviche is part of Peruvian cuisine but does carry food poisoning risk — reputable establishments are safer. Lima's coastal fog (the garua) can be heavy May–October. We cover all this at your appointment.

Common Peru travel and altitude questions
Do I need Yellow Fever for Peru?
Recommended for travellers visiting Amazon regions (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Manu). Not required for Lima, Cusco or Machu Picchu only. Sometimes required for onward travel from Peru to certain countries. We're a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.
What about Cusco altitude?
Cusco at 3,400m affects most unacclimatised travellers. We discuss acclimatisation strategy (spend a couple of nights in Cusco before any trekking), acetazolamide (Diamox), and warning signs. The classic Inca Trail reaches 4,215m so altitude planning matters even more.
Should I bother with malaria tablets?
For Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu only, no. For Amazon trips including Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado, yes — we prescribe and dispense tablets at the appointment.
Is ceviche safe to eat?
At reputable restaurants, usually fine. Street ceviche and informal vendors carry higher food-poisoning risk. Hep A + Typhoid vaccines reduce the consequences if you do get caught out.
What about coca leaves?
Traditional altitude remedy — mild stimulant effect, generally safe in moderation. Not a replacement for proper acclimatisation or Diamox if you're sensitive to altitude.
How early should I book?
Ideally 4–6 weeks before travel. Yellow Fever certificate must be at least 10 days old at arrival in YF-restricted areas — minimum 2 weeks before departure.
Can children travel to Peru safely?
Yes. Vaccines licensed for paediatric use. Altitude tolerance varies in children; we discuss this if you're travelling with kids.
