Maldives Travel Health and Pre-Travel Review
Routine boosters, dive safety, sun exposure, dengue if visiting Malé.
Pre-travel review for resort and dive travel to the Maldives
The Maldives is one of the most travel-health-friendly destinations — high-end resort and dive travel, modern healthcare on Malé, no required vaccinations, and very low infectious disease risk in the resort and dive-boat circuit. What we cover at the appointment: routine booster review, dive safety planning, sun exposure, and a couple of region-specific notes.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run Maldives pre-travel appointments year-round, peak booking December through April. A typical appointment is 30 minutes.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
For Maldives most travellers consider: an up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis A if going outside resort restaurants, and dive-specific safety considerations if diving.

The Maldives is among the lowest-vaccine destinations
No mandatory vaccinations. No malaria. Modern healthcare on Malé. The pre-travel conversation is short and focused on practical things — dive safety, sun exposure, dengue if you're going into Malé.
Routine booster check
Up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster if it's been more than 10 years — general housekeeping for international travel.
Hepatitis A — optional
For resort and dive-boat travel, Hepatitis A isn't strictly necessary — resort kitchens are well-controlled. Worth considering for travellers visiting Malé (where eating outside hotels is more common) or doing local-island stays.
Dive safety — the main travel-health conversation
The Maldives is one of the world's top diving destinations. Standard dive safety considerations: 24-hour gap before flying after dives (this is non-negotiable for safe outgassing of nitrogen — plan your dives so the last dive is at least 24h before your flight home, longer if multiple dives). Hyperbaric chamber access — there's one chamber at Bandos near Malé and dive operators arrange evacuation. Dive insurance covering hyperbaric treatment is strongly recommended. We discuss dive medical clearance (PADI form) if applicable.
Sun exposure
Year-round tropical sun on or near the equator — UV intensity is high. High-SPF (50+), water-resistant cream essential. Sunburn is statistically the most common preventable health issue for Maldives travellers. Reapply after every swim. Hat and UV-protective rash vest help on snorkelling/diving days.
Dengue — limited to Malé and local islands
Dengue is present in Malé and on local islands at moderate levels. Resort islands are essentially mosquito-free (or very low). If your itinerary includes Malé or local islands, bite-prevention applies: DEET and long clothing especially around dawn/dusk.
Sea creature safety
Reef cuts, jellyfish, sea urchin spines and rare encounters with stonefish or lionfish are the actual things that affect Maldives travellers most often. We cover practical first aid — vinegar for jellyfish, hot water immersion for stonefish/lionfish stings, and when to seek medical attention.
Yellow Fever
Required only if you've transited a Yellow Fever risk country in the 6 days before arrival.

Common Maldives travel questions

Is there malaria?
No — Maldives is malaria-free.
Is there dengue?
Present in Malé and local islands at moderate levels. Resort islands are essentially mosquito-free. If your itinerary includes Malé or local islands, bite prevention applies.
What's the dive safety advice?
24-hour gap before flying after dives (non-negotiable). Hyperbaric chamber access is on Bandos near Malé. Dive insurance covering hyperbaric treatment is strongly recommended. We can discuss PADI dive medical clearance forms.
How bad is sun exposure?
Extreme. Year-round equatorial sun, UV reflection off water and white sand. High-SPF (50+), water-resistant cream essential. Sunburn is the most common preventable health issue.
What about sea creature stings?
Reef cuts, jellyfish and sea urchin spines are common. Stonefish and lionfish rare but serious. Vinegar for jellyfish, hot water immersion for stonefish/lionfish. We cover first aid at your appointment.
