Jordan Travel Health and Vaccinations
Hep A, optional Typhoid, routine boosters, and heat illness brief for Petra and Wadi Rum.
Pre-travel vaccines for Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and Amman
Jordan is the smaller but distinctive Middle East travel destination — Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Amman, and increasingly the Red Sea coast at Aqaba. UK visitor numbers have grown steadily. The travel-health profile is moderate: no mandatory vaccines, manageable food and water considerations, and heat as the biggest practical risk.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run Jordan pre-travel appointments year-round, with peaks ahead of spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when most UK travellers go to avoid extreme summer heat. A typical appointment is 30 minutes.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
For Jordan trips most travellers consider: Hepatitis A (recommended), Typhoid (especially if you're eating street food or staying outside hotels), an up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, and Hepatitis B for longer stays.

Jordan is moderate-vaccine, high-practical-considerations
The vaccine list is short. The practical advice for Petra and the desert is what makes the bigger difference for most travellers.
Hepatitis A — the priority vaccine
Hepatitis A is recommended for almost all Jordan travellers. Food and water exposure is real — even in hotel restaurants. Single injection, long-term protection.
Typhoid — trip-dependent
Typhoid is worth considering for travellers going outside the standard hotel circuit — street food in Amman, Petra and the desert camps, family stays, longer visits. Combined Hep A and Typhoid is available as a single injection.
Routine boosters
Up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster if it's been more than 10 years. Hepatitis B for longer stays.
Petra is a long, hot walk
Petra is statistically more physically demanding than most visitors expect — the standard tour involves several kilometres of walking on uneven ground, often in significant heat. The walk down to and up from the Monastery (Ad Deir) adds another 800+ steps each way. Heat exhaustion, dehydration and ankle sprains are the most common issues we hear about from returning travellers. We discuss: hydration strategy, sun exposure, appropriate footwear, and pacing.
Wadi Rum and the desert
Daytime temperatures in Wadi Rum can exceed 40°C in summer; nights in winter desert can drop to near-freezing. Bedouin camp stays are typically comfortable but bring a wide range of clothing. The same hydration and sun-exposure rules apply, plus practical guidance on what to expect from desert food and overnight conditions.
The Dead Sea, Aqaba and the Red Sea
The Dead Sea on the Jordanian side has the same considerations as the Israeli side — don't splash, wear water shoes, don't shave the day before. Aqaba's Red Sea diving is generally low-risk but worth a quick decompression-safety brief if you're diving deep or frequently.

Common Jordan travel vaccine questions
Do I need vaccines for Jordan?
No mandatory vaccines. We recommend Hepatitis A for almost all travellers, Typhoid for trips outside the hotel circuit, and a Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster check.
Is malaria a risk in Jordan?
No — Jordan has been malaria-free for many years.
Is the tap water safe?
Bottled or filtered water is recommended throughout Jordan, including in Amman. The food and water risk is higher in less-touristed areas and Bedouin camps.
How demanding is Petra physically?
More than most visitors expect. The standard route is 4–6km on uneven ground, with the Monastery adding 800+ steps each way. Plan for water, sun protection, sturdy shoes and breaks. Heat illness is the most common Petra problem.
What about Wadi Rum?
Summer daytime temperatures exceed 40°C; winter nights can drop near-freezing. Plan clothing accordingly. Bedouin camps are typically comfortable.
Can I dive in Aqaba?
Yes — the Red Sea diving from Aqaba is good. Standard dive safety rules apply: 24-hour gap before flying after dives, hydration, appropriate certifications.
