Fiji Travel Health and Vaccinations
Hep A, Typhoid, routine boosters, dengue and dive safety.
Pre-travel vaccines for Nadi, the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, and Suva
Fiji is the headline South Pacific destination for UK travellers — Nadi as the entry point, the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands for resort and island-hopping travel, Suva for cultural travel, and increasingly Taveuni for diving and the Coral Coast. The travel-health profile is moderate: no mandatory vaccines (unless arriving from a YF country), no malaria, dengue and Zika as the main mosquito concerns, and dive safety planning for the many travellers doing the Rainbow Reef and Beqa Lagoon.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run Fiji pre-travel appointments year-round, with peak booking April through October. A typical appointment is 30 minutes.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
For Fiji most travellers consider: Hepatitis A (recommended), Typhoid (often recommended), Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis B for longer stays, and dive safety planning if diving.

Fiji is moderate-vaccine with dive safety and dengue as the main practical considerations
Vaccines are the standard South Pacific bundle. The bigger conversation for many travellers is dive safety and dengue/Zika prevention.
Hep A and Typhoid — the standard pair
Hepatitis A recommended for almost all Fiji travellers — food and water exposure is real, especially in island stays and outside main resorts. Typhoid worth considering particularly for travellers going outside resort kitchens or doing village/homestay visits.
Routine boosters
Up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster if it's been more than 10 years. Hepatitis B for longer stays or healthcare exposure.
Dengue and Zika — the mosquito story
Both dengue and Zika are present in Fiji with periodic outbreaks. Dengue peaks in the wet season (November–April). Zika has implications for pregnancy planning — we'll discuss with travellers who are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Prevention is bite-avoidance: DEET-based repellent, long clothing where practical, especially around dawn/dusk and during the day.
Malaria
Fiji is malaria-free — no tablets needed.
Yellow Fever
Required only if you've transited a Yellow Fever risk country in the 6 days before arrival.
Dive safety
Fiji has world-class diving including Rainbow Reef on Taveuni, Beqa Lagoon shark diving, and the soft coral capital reputation. Standard dive safety: 24-hour gap before flying, dive insurance covering hyperbaric treatment, appropriate certifications. Hyperbaric chamber access is at Suva and limited — evacuation could take hours from remote islands. We discuss this at your appointment.
Sun and sea creatures
Year-round tropical sun — high-SPF water-resistant cream essential. Coral cuts, jellyfish (including the Portuguese man-o-war), sea urchin spines and stonefish/lionfish are practical risks. We cover first aid.
Cyclone season
Cyclone season is November to April. Direct cyclone risk is unpredictable but disruption to flights and ferries is more common. Worth factoring into trip timing.

Common Fiji travel vaccine questions
Do I need vaccines for Fiji?
Hepatitis A and Typhoid recommended for most travellers. Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster check. Hepatitis B for longer stays. No mandatory vaccines unless arriving from a YF country.
Is there malaria in Fiji?
No — Fiji is malaria-free.
What about dengue and Zika?
Both present with periodic outbreaks. Dengue peaks in wet season (November–April). Zika has pregnancy considerations — we'll discuss with travellers who are pregnant or planning. Bite prevention is the strategy.
What's the dive safety advice?
24-hour gap before flying. Dive insurance covering hyperbaric treatment is essential. Hyperbaric chamber is in Suva, so evacuation from remote islands takes time. We discuss at the appointment.
Is the tap water safe?
In Nadi, Suva and resort areas, generally yes — though bottled is preferred. Smaller islands and village stays use rainwater or local supply — bottled or treated is safer.
What about cyclones?
Cyclone season November to April. Direct cyclone strikes are unpredictable but flight and ferry disruption is common. Worth factoring into timing.
Can children travel safely?
Yes — Fiji is popular for family travel. Vaccines licensed for paediatric use. Sun protection and dengue prevention apply equally.
