Ethiopia Travel Health and Vaccinations
Yellow Fever, Hep A + Typhoid, focal malaria, altitude advice for Addis.
Pre-travel vaccines, altitude in Addis Ababa, the northern circuit and the Omo Valley
Ethiopia is one of the more distinctive African destinations — Addis Ababa, the northern historical circuit (Gondar, Lalibela, Aksum), the Simien Mountains, the Danakil depression, the Omo Valley tribal lands, and the southern lakes. UK visitor numbers have grown with cultural tourism and the increasing diaspora travel patterns. The travel-health profile combines Yellow Fever requirements, altitude (Addis at 2,355m and northern circuit higher), focal malaria, and current outbreak surveillance.
At Gunwharf Travel Clinic we run Ethiopia pre-travel appointments year-round. A typical appointment is 30 minutes.
Abdullah Seyed (MPharm, GPhC reg. 2211356) leads day-to-day clinical practice. Merali Pharmacy, operating Gunwharf Travel Clinic, is GPhC-registered (premises 1099145).
For Ethiopia you'll typically consider: Yellow Fever certificate (required from travellers arriving from YF-risk countries, recommended for lowland Ethiopia), Hepatitis A and Typhoid, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster, Hepatitis B for longer stays, Rabies for rural travel, Meningitis ACWY for dry-season travel to northern areas, and malaria tablets for lowland travel.

Ethiopia is varied geographically and so is its travel-health profile
From highland tourist circuits to lowland malaria zones and tribal Omo Valley, the considerations vary substantially.
Yellow Fever — transit-dependent and lowland recommendation
Yellow Fever is required from travellers arriving from YF-risk countries (most of West and Central Africa and parts of South America), checked at Addis Ababa airport. Even without transit requirement, recommended for travellers visiting lowland areas including southern Ethiopia. Single injection, certificate valid for life. We're a NaTHNaC-designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.
Malaria — focal, lowland
Ethiopia's malaria risk is concentrated in lowland areas below about 2,000m — the southern lowlands, the Rift Valley lakes region, the Omo Valley, and parts of the western lowlands. Addis Ababa and the northern historical circuit at altitude are essentially malaria-free. We map your itinerary and prescribe tablets if relevant.
Hep A, Typhoid and routine boosters
Food and water exposure throughout Ethiopia. Hepatitis A and Typhoid recommended for almost all travellers. Up-to-date Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster. Hepatitis B for longer stays.
Addis altitude — modest but real
Addis sits at 2,355m — enough to cause mild altitude symptoms in some travellers in the first 24–48 hours. Most adapt quickly. Northern circuit destinations including Gondar (~2,100m) and Lalibela (~2,500m) are similar. The Simien Mountains reach over 4,500m which is a different conversation — we cover Diamox and acclimatisation if you're trekking.
Meningitis belt — northern consideration
Northern Ethiopia sits within the African meningitis belt. From December through June (dry season), Meningitis ACWY worth considering for long-stay travellers or those mixing closely with local populations in the north.
Outbreak surveillance
Ethiopia has had periodic outbreaks of cholera, measles, and recently dengue in lowland areas. We check current WHO and UKHSA outbreak status at each appointment.
Diaspora and business travel
A common pattern: Ethiopian diaspora travellers going home for family events or extended visits. The travel-health considerations apply equally regardless of nationality. We see plenty of diaspora bookings.
